Volcan Villarica
The “3 Volcanoes” 10-day ski tour takes us deep into the broad southern Andes. Our goal: bag three of Southern Chile’s most beautiful volcanos via alpine ski touring.

These volcanos sky thousands of meters above the fertile lands and national reserves of Chile’s stunning 8th and 9th regions. The three descents alone offer over 15,000 vertical feet of classic volcanic skiing, and we will explore thousands more in the days in between. This guided journey is open to the advanced and expert skier and rider looking to earn their turns and venture into the spectacular world of volcanic ski touring in Chile.

Tres Volcanoes Ski Tour - Itinerary
DAY 1: We will meet you at the Airport in Temuco, the capital of Chile’s Araucaria Region and drive to Chile’s adventure hub, Pucon, our home at the base of the active Villarrica Volcano for the next several days.
Pucon, or “Entrance to the Mountain” is that and more. This quiet mountain town borders 2 national parks, a national reserve, and sits on the black sand beach of Lake Villarrica. In addition to skiing Volcano Villarrica, Pucon offers class 4-5 river rafting, volcanic caves, hot springs, mountain biking, 4x4 trips, snowshoeing in nearby reserves including the Cani, and much more.
After checking into our comfortable hotel and dinner on the town, the rest of the evening will be free to relax, and get ready for our attempt to climb Villarrica.

Approaching Summit of Villarica

Villarica Crater
DAY 2 VOLCAN VILLARICA: An early ascent will take us to the 2,840m (9317 ft.) peak of Volcano Villarrica. The tour takes approx. 4 to 5 hours, and provides an epic panoramic view of Chile’s Lake District and nearby smoking Volcanoes. If that’s not enough, when was the last time you peered into one of the world’s most active craters?
The last major eruption was in 1985, and minor eruptions are occurring as you read this. Our descent back to Villarrica’s small ski resort is over 1640 vertical meters (5380 feet) through the alpine slopes, deep lava flows creating natural half pipes, cornices and wind lips.
We finish the day with a sunset soak in the nearby thermal hot springs along side the cold waters of the Liucura River. After a day like this, if you still have legs, you might want to celebrate in town at the Casino, discotec, or one of many late night pubs.
DAY 3: Today we continue our attempt to summit the volcano if weather has been a factor, or hit the fun terrain with easy touring access of Volcano Villarrica. If the snow line is low enough, we can finish the afternoons with a local’s favorite 15-minute descent to the volcanic caves surrounded by native forests.
Our evening will be spent with the Martinez Family on their farm near the Northeast face of the Volcano. A traditional Chilean asado (Barbecue) awaits us and gives you the chance to get to know a piece of the local culture. The Martinez’s daughter speaks English, and works as a local guide to the area. She is also operating an Eco-bed & breakfast giving travelers a real perspective of what life is like living on a Mapuche Farm in Southern Chile.
Chilean Asado
Volcan Lonquimay
DAYS 4-6 VOLCAN LONQUIMAY: Today we head north, into the sacred lands of the Mapuche Indians (People of the land). Surrounded by expansive farmland, volcanoes, National Reserves, and abundant thermal hot springs, the beautiful Malalcahuello region will be our base as we attempt to summit and ski Volcano Lonquimay.
After checking into our friendly hotel, we will have time to spend the afternoon exploring the volcanic terrain of Chile’s newest and friendliest ski resort, Corralco, get a short tour in and view our route for tomorrow ascent to Lonquimay’s crater at 2,865m.
Two more days here for flexibility with a focus on bagging the crater… We get an early start with a little help from an excellent breakfast provided by our hosts Eva and Tom. Based in a large Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle Tree) Forest, Corralco offers us easy access to begin our day, touring the southern face of Lonquimay.
The rewarding climb takes approximately 3-4 hours, and offers views that may rival those from Villarrica. You will see 7 nearby volcanoes, and a distant view into neighboring Argentina. The Northeast pitch offers a constant pitch of 35-45 degrees, on classic snow covered volcanic terrain.
The late afternoon will be spent soaking our legs in the nearby Malalcahello Hot springs followed by well deserved homemade dinner, Southern Chile style.
DAYS 7-9 VOLCAN CHILLAN: Today we drive to Termas de Chillan, where we will be spending the remaining days in comfortable cabins and one of Chile’s deepest snow packs.
Arriving into the city of Chillan, we will have an opportunity to check out Chile’s most well known and beautiful markets. Stocked with Mapuche crafts, and woodwork from campensinos, this is a perfect place to pick up souvenirs and gifts for home.
From the city of Chillan, we have a short drive to Las Trancas, the quiet town near the killer slopes of Termas de Chillan.
Hot Springs
Volcan Chillan
Two full days in the backcountry will get us to some of the best off-piste adventures in South America, including our main goal, ski touring to Chillan’s ancient crater.
The touring here is excellent, accessing some of the longest descents and better terrain in the Andes. For the night owls, the final evening at the Snow Pub discotec always gets interesting.

DAY 10: CHILLAN/SANTIAGO: An early morning check out, and it is off to Santiago. You will arrive in the afternoon allowing for connections to evening departures, and access to numerous central hotels we can recommend for those of you staying a few extra days for sight seeing in Santiago.
